The Call at the Door
A Story About Hearing Jesus, Loving God, and Loving People
Chapter 1: The Soft Knock
In a small town called Sunnybrook, there lived a boy named Eli. Eli was seven years old and curious about everything. He loved his blue sneakers, peanut butter sandwiches, and his dog, Milo, who wagged his tail even when he was asleep.
Every morning, Eli’s mom would say,
“Good morning! Today is a gift from God.”
Eli would smile and say,
“Good morning!”
But most days, he didn’t think much more about it.
One afternoon, after school, Eli sat at the kitchen table coloring a picture of a house. He drew a big door right in the middle.
Just then, he heard something strange.
Knock. Knock.
Eli looked up.
“Mom?” he asked.
“No one’s at the door,” she said from the other room.
Eli listened again.
Nothing.
He shrugged and went back to coloring.
But that night, when Eli climbed into bed, he heard it again—soft and gentle.
Knock. Knock.
This time it felt different. Warmer. Kinder.
Eli whispered, “Hello?”
And deep inside his heart, he felt a quiet voice say:
“Here I am. I stand at the door and knock.”
Eli didn’t see anyone. But he felt peaceful, like being wrapped in his favorite blanket.
“What door?” Eli wondered.
He drifted off to sleep, not knowing that his life was about to change.
Chapter 2: The Door Inside
The next morning, Eli told his grandma about the knocking.
Grandma smiled and stirred her oatmeal slowly.
“That sounds like Jesus,” she said.
“Jesus knocks?” Eli asked.
“Yes,” Grandma said gently. “Not on houses. On hearts.”
She tapped her chest softly.
“Jesus invites us to open our hearts to Him. When we say yes, He comes in and stays with us.”
“Forever?” Eli asked.
“Yes,” Grandma said. “And saying yes isn’t the end—it’s the beginning.”
Eli thought about that all day.
That night, before bed, Eli whispered,
“Jesus… if You’re knocking… You can come in.”
Nothing loud happened. No lights. No trumpets.
But Eli felt happy. Brave. Loved.
He had answered the call.
Chapter 3: The Race That Never Ends
The next week at school, Eli’s teacher announced a fun run.
“We’re not racing to beat others,” she said.
“We’re racing to finish strong!”
Eli ran as fast as he could. His legs got tired. His lungs puffed.
But he didn’t stop.
Later that night, Eli told Grandma,
“I kept running even when it was hard.”
Grandma nodded.
“That’s like following Jesus. We keep going. We press on.”
She opened her Bible and read:
“I press on toward the goal.”
“What’s the goal?” Eli asked.
“To know Jesus better every day,” Grandma said.
Eli smiled.
“I want to keep running with Jesus.”
Chapter 4: A Tricky Question
One afternoon, Eli imagined what it would have been like to meet Jesus.
In his imagination, Jesus was sitting under a tree. Some grown-ups were standing nearby, asking hard questions.
One of them said,
“Teacher, what is the most important rule?”
Eli leaned closer.
Jesus smiled kindly and said:
“Love God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.”
Then He added:
“And love your neighbor as yourself.”
Eli blinked.
“That’s it?” he whispered.
Two rules.
Love God.
Love people.
Everything else fits inside those two.
Chapter 5: The Word Shema
That evening, Grandma taught Eli a special word.
“Shema,” she said.
“What does it mean?” Eli asked.
“It means to hear,” Grandma explained.
“But not just hear. It means to listen… and obey.”
She said:
“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.
Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and strength.”
Grandma smiled.
“It’s like a phone ringing,” she said.
“It’s not enough to hear it. You have to pick it up.”
Eli giggled.
That night, before bed, Eli prayed the Shema.
In the morning, he prayed it again.
It felt like answering Jesus every day.
Chapter 6: Loving God at Home
Eli began to notice something.
When he loved God, he wanted to show it.
He helped set the table.
He shared his toys with his sister.
He listened when his parents spoke.
One day, his mom asked,
“Why are you being so helpful?”
Eli shrugged and said,
“I’m loving God with my actions.”
Mom hugged him tight.
Chapter 7: Loving People at School
At school, a boy named Lucas sat alone at lunch.
Other kids said,
“He’s weird.”
Eli remembered Jesus’ words.
Love your neighbor.
So Eli walked over and said,
“Hi. Want to sit with me?”
Lucas smiled for the first time that day.
They shared apples and laughed.
That night, Eli told Jesus,
“I tried to love people today.”
And deep inside, Eli felt the warm smile again.
Chapter 8: The Rules That Point to Love
One day, Eli asked Grandma,
“Why are there so many rules in the Bible?”
Grandma answered,
“They teach us how to love.”
She explained:
“Don’t lie—because lies hurt people.
Don’t steal—because things matter to others.
Be fair—because everyone is important.
Help the poor—because God loves them.”
Eli nodded.
“So rules aren’t about being mean,” he said.
“They’re about being loving.”
Grandma smiled.
“Exactly.”
Chapter 9: Jesus Fulfills It All
Grandma told Eli something important.
“Jesus didn’t come to erase God’s Word,” she said.
“He came to fulfill it.”
“What does that mean?” Eli asked.
“It means Jesus shows us how to love perfectly,” she said.
“Not just with our hands—but with our hearts.”
Eli thought about being kind even when angry.
Being pure in thoughts.
Forgiving instead of holding grudges.
That felt hard.
But Jesus was with him.
Chapter 10: The Open Door
One night, Eli dreamed of a house.
There was a door with his name on it.
Jesus stood outside, smiling.
The door was open.
Inside the house were pictures of Eli helping, loving, praying, and growing.
Jesus said softly,
“Keep loving God.
Keep loving people.
Never stop answering the call.”
Eli woke up smiling.
Chapter 11: Never Stop Being Unstoppable
Eli grew—not just taller, but stronger in love.
Some days were easy.
Some days were hard.
But every morning and every night, Eli prayed:
“Hear, O God. I’m listening.”
He knew something important:
Loving Jesus wasn’t a one-time thing.
It was a walk.
A race.
A daily yes.
And Jesus was with him every step.
Chapter 12: Your Call Too
And now, dear reader, the story comes to you.
Jesus is still knocking.
Not loudly.
Not forcefully.
But kindly.
When you hear Him, you can answer.
You can say:
“Yes, Jesus.”
“Yes to loving God.”
“Yes to loving people.”
Because the greatest call of all is this:
💛 Love God
💛 Love People
And never stop being unstoppable.

• Answer Jesus’ call by putting God first
The door is open.
The call is real.
